The Occupational Health Program Nurse Practitioner is accountable to the Occupational Health and Safety and clinically accountable to employees. The Nurse Practitioner (NP) is matrixed to the Associate Director for Patient/Nursing Services (ADPNS) for nursing practice. The NP will consult with the UCC Supervisor on the day to day operation of the Occupational Health Section of facility safety management of Employee Health. The NP will serve as a consultant in identifying and addressing ethical and compliance issues related to occupational health. The NP will coordinate employee activities to include: Pre-employment physical exams, health assessments, work-related injury management, fitness for duty evaluations and FMLA leaves. Integrates and coordinates program activities with other administrative and clinical services in an effort to improve clinical processes and achieve program goals.NP will provide care within the Scope of Practice and provided feedback to the UCC Supervisor(Physician). The NP will work with all levels of management on related employee health and safety issues, educates workforce on occupational health issues, establishes a climate within the facility that promotes optimal care for employees and uses the nursing process as framework for management of care. NP will follow established nursing standards, procedures and policies, giving specific patient care direction to the assigned Register Nurse(RN) or License Practical Nurse (LPN) for employee occupational health related cases.

Responsibilities

Formulates the appropriate plan of action based on history, physical exam and clinical findings. Identifies needs of the individuals and facility. Determines interventions/actions based upon established priorities. Actions by the Nurse Practitioner are: consistent with scientific principles, theoretical knowledge and clinical expertise, individual to the specific situation, consistent with teaching and learning opportunities. This includes: accurately conducting and interpreting diagnostic tests, prescribing pharmacological agents, prescribing non-pharmacological therapies, providing relevant patient education and making appropriate referrals to other health care professionals and community agencies, within approved Scope of Practice. Obtains relevant health and medical histories. Performs initial histories and physical examinations based on job requirements. Conducts preventive screening procedures based on job requirements. Identifies medical and health needs. Performs all Medical Surveillance for the Medical center employee to include: TB Testing, Hearing Testing, Chemical Exposure Testing, etc. Updates and records change in health status. Responsible for Americans with Disabilities Act accommodations and fitness for duty evaluations. Participates as a team member in the provision of medical and health care, interacting with professional colleagues to provide a comprehensive program. Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams. Participates in departmental/facility wide committees as assigned. Represents the department and facility in community outreach efforts. Networks with peers in other VAMC hospitals and community to discuss best practices. Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Full unrestricted Licensure, Certification, or Registration required. A nurse practitioner must be licensed or otherwise recognized as a nurse practitioner in a State, possess a master's degree from a program accredited by the NLNAC or CCNE, and maintain full and current certification as a nurse practitioner from the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body. (The certification MUST be in the specialty to which the individual is being appointed or selected). Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.

. Preferred Experience: 1 -2 Years of Nurse Practitioner experience

Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: * Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree. Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-6 Nurse Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

Physical Requirements: May require occasional heavy lifting (45 lbs and over); moderate carrying (15-44 lbs); standing, walking, and kneeling; pushing/pulling; the use of fingers on both hands; ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; near vision correctable; far vision correctable; depth perception; ability to distinguish basic color and shades of colors (hearing aid permitted)

Participation in seasonal influenza program may be required.

Annual leave shall accrue for full-time Nurses, and Nurse Anesthetists at the rate of 8 hours for each full biweekly pay period.
